How to get rid of stretch marks
Stretchmarks (or striae as they are referred to in dermatological terms) are caused when an individual’s skin is stretched suddenly : to be precise, the skin’s second layer is not stretched, but torn. They are most common around the stomach, breasts, thighs and hips. People of all ages can suffer from stretch marks and they affect a lot of adults. Fortunately, our health is not affected by them and only affect us cosmetically. Of course, During the summer months, Stretch marks are more concerning for us because they are on show more as we wear fewer clothes.
Stretch marks occur when the body grows so fast that the skin doesn’t stretch fast enough to keep up with it. Stretch marks are most commonly associated with pregnancy but are also a normal part of puberty: Body building or quick weight gain can also result in stretch marks.
Although skin is normally very elastic , when it is overstretched, the normal production of collagen is disrupted. It is this collagen which helps to make sure the skin stays tight and supple. There are factors outside the body which affect the skins natural ability to produce and maintain collagen levels such as diet or smoking It is the level of collagen in the skin which affect lines and wrinkles on the face. They also influence how other blemishes, like surgery scars and acne scars, heal.
What do stretch marks look like?
When initially formed, stretch marks stand out as red / purple lines. They are indented and feel different to the surronding skin. after a while, the reddish purple colour subsides, turning a lighter colour, generally silver, and fade away slightly. The ability to heal however does vary considerably from individual to individual.
